“….TO YOU I pray.”

“Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray.”

(Psalm 5:2)

Sometimes we have nowhere else to go but prayer.   At times, it is difficult to know how to pray.   In times of crisis and confusion, when the words just aren’t there, it is good to get focused on what is really  important in prayer—–being in the presence of God.   As the Psalmist penned it, “….TO YOU I pray.”

I noticed yesterday that our car windshield is really loaded with bugs.   The bugs (what’s left of them)  block the view and create a distraction.   The bugs tempt me to focus on the windshield rather than where my eyes need to be—-beyond the windshield to the view and journey ahead.

I’m being inspired these days by a great book, “A Praying Life” by David Powlison.  As he puts it, “In prayer, focusing on the conversation is like trying to drive while looking at the windshield instead of through it.  It freezes us, making us unsure of where to go.”

I’m asking God this morning to clean the windshield of prayer, get rid of the bugs, and help me not to focus on the words or mechanics of prayer.    Help, me Lord, to focus on YOU, not just on the conversation aspect of prayer.

Prayer is simply the window.

“But I pray to you, O Lord,  in the time of your favor;  in your great love, O God, answer me with your sure salvation.”  (Psalm 69:13)
